Why compost?
Landfill Directives require 18 million tonnes per year of putrescible materials to be diverted from landfill by 2020. This requires 600 new composting facilities across the UK. Recent legislative developments promote a reduction in use of artificial fertilizers and a return to natural sustainable nutrients.
Recent WRAP growing trials show increased benefits with use of growing medias containing compost from green waste. Growers need to be made aware of these benefits and also the different irrigation requirements of these materials compared with peat based growing medias to get the best from them. Conversion will take time, require a boost in confidence for commercial growers and probably need some legislative changes. Visit Peatering Out for 15 good reasons for using green compost in growing media.
Waste online has a composting information sheet concerning the biodegradable element of municipal waste.
